20 Best Breads to Go with Soup
A cozy bowl of soup always tastes better with a warm slice of fresh bread to go with it! You could slice a homemade bread loaf, butter a biscuit, slice a cornbread, or grab a dinner roll. Here are the best breads to go with soup!

During the fall my family and I tested all the recipes I wrote for The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook, we practically lived on soup!
What goes better with a cozy bowl of homemade soup than a slice of warm fresh bread straight out of the bread maker??
Even when I'm giving my bread machines a break, it's just not soup night unless I've got the bread basket filled with something warm and waiting for a pat of butter.
Here are all my favorite recipes for perfect breads to go with a fresh pot of soup.
Soup Breads from My Cookbook

If you've got a copy of my bread maker cookbook, The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook, you'll find an entire chapter on soups to pair with breads but truly there are excellent options all throughout the book like:
- Rosemary Herb Bread, page 39
- Farmer's Market Veggie Patch Bread, page 40
- Loaded Baked Potato Bread, page 51
- Beer Flight Bread, page 55
Until you have a copy, these are the other delicious bread recipes you can get baking right now:
Steakhouse Brown Bread
I'm pretty sure my steakhouse brown bread is the most popular recipe from the cookbook!
My The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook readers comment all the time about how they love to serve this with hearty soups, stews, and spicy chilis.
Soup Pairing:
This is one of the most versatile bread recipes and it would taste great with just about any soup you make but I love it with tomato-based soups the most.
I would recommend pairing it with this red chicken chili or this Instant Pot stuffed pepper soup!

Italian Bread
This bread machine Italian bread is the perfect all-purpose loaf you'll turn to time and time again. It is perfect for serving with just about any soup since it has such a neutral flavor.
My The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook readers comment all the time about how they love to serve this with hearty soups, stews, and spicy chilis.
Soup Pairing:
This is one of the most versatile bread recipes and it would taste great with just about any soup you make but I love to spread it with butter and then dunk it in brothy soups.

Bread Machine Potato Bread
If you're looking for a more neutral flavored bread with an amazing texture perfect for dipping, look no further than this easy bread machine potato bread.
Cut it into triangles, slather with a little butter, and dip away!
Soup Pairings:
Another very versatile loaf, you could pair this with just about any savory soup. I like to pair it with soups that are a little spicy since this helps tone the heat down a bit.
Try it with my spicy sausage and lentil soup or my favorite sweet and sour cabbage soup.

Whole Wheat Breadsticks
Parmesan dusted whole wheat breadsticks start with an easy bread maker dough and then are quickly shaped and baked in the oven.
That breadstick shape had to have been invented for dunking!
Soup Pairings:
The nutty whole wheat flavor makes every bite more delicious than the last. Pair these with an Italian style soup like my Instant Pot ground turkey soup or this Tuscan chicken soup.

Easy Rosemary Pull Apart Rolls
The buttery herbed top on these easy rosemary pull apart rolls is just perfect for more delicate brothy soups.
Soup Pairings:
This would be an ideal choice for a chicken stock-based soup like my homemade chicken soup or this Greek-style gnocchi soup with lemon.

Celery Seed Bread
I love testing out unique bread flavors in my bread machines. This celery seed bread was a fun one to try with hints of onion in the crumb.
Soup Pairings:
The celery seed naturally pairs well with a bolder soup like my Crockpot tortellini soup with ground beef or this rich split pea and carrot soup.

Sourdough Focaccia
I could put squares of fresh sourdough focaccia in a bread basket and my family would find just about any excuse to eat it right up. That sour tang from the starter makes this a perfect soup partner.
Soup Pairings:
Dunk it in a thick bowl of ground beef chili or use it to sop up all the bits of gravy from this easy stovetop beef stew.

Swiss Cheese Bread
Sometimes the bowl of soup is just the conduit for a few vegetables so that you can thoroughly enjoy a more decadent bread as the main hero of the dinner! My easy Swiss cheese bread starts with a loaf from your local bakery and then is simply dressed up with butter and herbs and shredded cheese.
Soup Pairings:
Try a simple creamy soup like my easy tomato bisque or a bowl of Irish potato soup that really lets the bread shine.

Cast Iron Cornbread
Chili night all but demands a skillet of buttery cast iron cornbread. My recipe has shredded cheddar and green chilis hiding under that gorgeous golden brown crust.
Soup Pairings:
Pair this with a big vat of tomato-based chili or save it for adding flavor to my Caribbean chicken soup-- I like to crumble the cornbread right into the broth for that one!

Irish Soda Bread with Raisins
Every year I make a St. Patrick's Day dinner with Irish soda bread with raisins for our bread basket. It is more traditionally served as a brunch item but I think it makes a surprisingly fun addition to the dinner menu.
Soup Pairings:
Irish potato soup, of course! But, this would taste amazing with a cozy bowl of Instant Pot chicken and rice soup, too.

Sourdough Discard Crackers
If you keep sourdough discard on hand, you must try these easy sourdough discard crackers! I make big pans of them and store them in an airtight container for soup night.
Soup Pairings:
Change up the herbs on the cracker and you can pair these with just about any soup at all. We love them with tomato pastina and Italian wedding soup.

Sourdough Popovers
With just 5 ingredients and 5 minutes prep, you can have these elegant sourdough popovers ready to pop into the oven.
While they are traditionally a dinner roll served with a fancy meal, I think they're just perfect for soup night because the soup can simmer on the stovetop while you wait for the popovers to be ready.

Everything Bagel Bread
You can use a jar of Everything but the Bagel seasoning to make this boldly flavored everything bagel bread as a pull-apart loaf right in your bread maker!
Soup Pairings:
I would serve this soup with a tomato-based soup that can handle some spice. My Crockpot chicken noodle soup actually has a hint of tomato paste in the broth and would work perfectly.

Bread Machine Focaccia
With a more neutral flavor than the sourdough version, my fluffy bread machine focaccia can be tweaked with all kinds of herbs to pair with a wide variety of dinners.
Soup Pairings:
Try adding this to the menu along with my lighter, meatless tortellini soup made with baby spinach and tender veggies.

Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits
With one bowl and a few minutes, you can stir together these easy copycat cheddar bay biscuits for the perfect soup side dish.
Soup Pairings:
The buttery, cheesy, herby biscuit pairs really well with seafood-based soups in particular. I love it with my hearty shrimp stew but wouldn't hesitate to serve it with a beef chili.

Herb Butter Biscuits
If you don't want to start with a homemade bread and need to upgrade a tube of prepared refrigerator biscuit dough, give my herb butter biscuits a try!
Soup Pairings:
The buttery, flaky biscuits are similar in flavor to garlic bread but would partner well with either tomato-based or chicken broth-based soups.

Save this for my spicy Caribbean chicken soup or a hearty chicken chili.

Easy Buttermilk Drop Biscuits
My easy buttermilk drop biscuits recipe has 4 flavor variations for you to make simple tweaks to partner with all kinds of recipes.

Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls
You can make homemade whole wheat dinner rolls simply by rolling my whole wheat hamburger buns into a smaller shape!
Soup Pairings:
The whole wheat flavor would a lot to a simple bowl of tomato bisque but is a nice addition to my spicy sausage and lentil soup, too.
