Celery seed bread bakes up perfectly in your bread machine. The savory onion flavor pairs well with hearty sandwiches and tomato-based soups for a cozy family dinner.

The loaf of celery seed bread has been sliced and sits on a board next to a cup of celery seeds.

While you're probably more familiar with sweet almond poppy seed bread or lemon poppy seed bread, have you ever considered trying to make a savory bread using celery seeds?

This unique loaf has hints of onion and celery and bakes up to golden brown perfection in your bread maker.

When you're getting bored with regular, plain white breads, the onion-celery seed bread adds SO much more flavor and a delicious chewy texture to hearty sandwiches and rich cozy soups this chilly season.

Why This is the Best Recipe

My husband and I tested dozens upon dozens of bread machine recipes while writing my cookbook, The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook. I think this is the best celery seed bread recipe because:

  1. 5-Minute Prep: You just dump the ingredients right into your bread maker, no chopping or prepping required other than a few simple measures.
  2. Chewy Texture: When you use milk as the liquid base for a homemade bread, it gives a lovely chewy texture.
  3. Savory Onion & Celery Flavor: I've used celery seeds to add flavor to my favorite angel hair coleslaw so it was already hiding in my pantry. I love this fun use for it!

Ingredients

The ingredients to make celery bread in the bread machine are on the kitchen counter.

I love baking homemade bread machine breads because the ingredient lists are always so real and wholesome:

  • Bread Flour: This flour has a higher protein content than regular all-purpose flour so it gives the bread a better shape as it bakes. You could still use all-purpose flour but your bread may not rise the same way.
  • Milk: I use 2% milk in all my recipes unless otherwise stated.
  • Canola Oil
  • Sugar
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Active Dry Yeast: You do not need yeast specifically marked "bread machine yeast" but if that's what you already have it will absolutely work.
  • Kosher Salt

Bread Machine Tips

As the author of The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook, I'm very passionate about baking homemade bread with a bread maker.

If you're curious and wondering if a bread maker is worth it, not only do I think the answer is yes but I've reviewed the most popular bread machine for beginners.

For this recipe, I used my Cuisinart bread machine.

Add the Wet Ingredients

This recipe begins as all my bread machine recipes do: By adding the wet ingredients to the pan first. This helps the machine to properly mix the dough.

Measure and add the milk, water, and canola oil and add them to the bread pan fitted with the paddle attachment.

Add the Dry Ingredients

Then measure the dry ingredients and add them right on top.

Add the bread flour, sugar, kosher salt, onion powder, and celery seed.

Use your spoon to dig a shallow well in the center of the flour and add the yeast there.

The flour and yeast have been added right on top of the wet ingredients in the bread machine pan.

Bread Maker Settings

Place the bread pan back into the bread machine.

Select the 2-pound loaf size.

Select your desired darkness setting, I used MEDIUM for the bread you see in these photos.

Select the BASIC/WHITE program and press START.

The basic/white program takes about 3.5 hours to complete. When the bread has finished baking, you'll want to remove it from the bread pan and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

The bread has a slice in front of it being spread with butter.

I loved serving this bread warm fresh from the bread machine along with softened butter for dinner with a tomato-based soup. It would pair really well with my Instant Pot stuffed pepper soup or this Crockpot tortellini soup but we loved it with my spicy sausage and lentil soup.

If you want to serve it as a sandwich bread, let the loaf cool completely. It will make getting uniform slices much easier.

The onion-celery flavor would add such a big punch to my open face turkey sandwich with gravy this Thanksgiving. It would also pair really well with hearty sandwich fillings like my roasted pork sandwich or this ham and havarti sandwich.

What to Do with Leftover Bread

If you find that you didn't use the entire loaf of bread within the first day or so, homemade bread freezes really well. I like to slice my bread before freezing so I can thaw just a piece or two at a time to make toast.

You could also cube the bread and make extra delicious homemade croutons for salads. This will help the bread keep for several days longer.

The onion and celery flavors would also add a lot to a homemade stuffing for a side dish.
