A piece of toast has been sliced into triangles and served on a blue plate next to a mug of coffee.

After baking dozens upon dozens of different bread machine recipes, I can confidently tell you that this recipe is one of my newest favorites.

The combination of chewy rolled oats and sweet maple syrup create a gorgeous golden brown loaf that could be used in countless delicious meals.

Make a savory sandwich, use it to make a bread pudding, or enjoy it as toast with your morning coffee, you can't go wrong with this classic bread.

Why This is the Best Recipe

I am a homemade bread connoisseur. I think this is the best maple oatmeal bread for the bread machine because:

  1. Easy Ingredients and Quick Prep: Such a short and simple list of items you'll need to bake it and prep time is just 5 minutes.
  2. Chewy Texture: The oats in the loaf give a delightful chewy texture to each slice.
  3. Subtly Sweet: The maple syrup is a gentle sweetener, this is not overly sugary tasting and would still pair so well with turkey or ham sandwiches.

Ingredients

The ingredients to make maple oatmeal bread in the bread machine are on the counter.

This easy recipe only needs a few simple ingredients:

  • Bread Flour
  • Buttermilk: If you don't have any on hand, you can make your own buttermilk with a ratio of 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar.
  • Maple Syrup
  • Rolled Oats: Also old fashioned oats, just don't use instant. You want the oats to be able to absorb the moisture from the dough over the longer period of time.
  • Butter
  • Active Dry Yeast: You do not need one specifically marked "bread machine yeast" but that would work if you have it.
  • Kosher Salt: I use Morton's brand Kosher salt.

Bread Machine Tips

As the author of The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook, I'm very passionate about baking homemade bread with a bread maker.

If you're curious and wondering if a bread maker is worth it, not only do I think the answer is yes but I've reviewed the most popular bread machine for beginners.

For this recipe, I used my Cuisinart bread machine.

Add the Wet Ingredients First

This easy bread machine recipe starts as almost all of them do: by adding the wet ingredients to the bread maker pan first.

Measure and pour in the buttermilk and the maple syrup.

Dice the softened butter into smaller pieces so it can blend in easily and dot them around the pan.

The milk, maple syrup, and the diced butter are in the bread machine pan.

Add the Dry Ingredients

Spoon the bread flour directly onto the wet ingredients.

Then measure the rolled oats and pour them around the perimeter of the pan.

Add the kosher salt over the oats and then use a spoon to dig a shallow well in the center of the flour. Add the yeast to that well.

The dry ingredients have been added on top of the wet ingredients in the bread maker pan.

Bread Maker Program

Place the bread pan back into the bread maker and close the lid.

Select the 2-pound bread size and choose your desired darkness setting. I chose the Medium darkness.

Select the Basic/White program and press Start.

NOTE: As the bread dough mixes together, you'll notice it looks very wet and sticky. The rolled oats will continue to absorb moisture from the dough over the 3.5 hour rising and baking cycle.

The baked loaf of bread is ready to be removed from the bread machine and has a gorgeous domed top.

Once the bread has finished baking, remove it from the bread machine pan and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Make Ahead and Freezing Tips

If you're worried about your delicious loaf of homemade bread spoiling before you can finish it, rest assured that it freezes perfectly.

I prefer to slice my bread and then store the loaf in a freezer-safe bag. Then I can thaw just a slice or two at a time for toasting or turning into a sandwich.

I pop the frozen bread slices right into the toaster and let them thaw and toast all at once. This also helps restore texture to the bread crumb and crust.

Serving Suggestions

The bread has been sliced and toasted. It is served on a blue plate with a mug of coffee.

There are so many delicious ways you could use this sweet maple oat bread. The obvious first choice would be to toast it and spread some salted butter over it for breakfast. A schmear of my sweet cream cheese ball would be a delicious choice, too.

You could dice it into cubes and turn it into a bread pudding for a special dessert.

If you want to make it into a savory sandwich, the sweetness of the bread would pair really well with either a spicy chicken like my slowcooker hot honey chicken filling or a tart cranberry filled sandwich like my cranberry turkey sliders or this spicy cranberry chicken salad.

For fall, use it to make a grilled ham and havarti sandwich or this easy turkey brie sandwich.
