Why This is the Best Recipe
- Fresh Lemons, Nothing Artificial: Skip the artificial lemon flavoring, just use a real lemon.
- 2 Ingredients: You probably have everything you need right now.
- 5 Minutes: You can often make the glaze in less time than it takes for your baked treat to finish baking!
Ingredients
This easy recipe only requires 2 ingredients:
- Fresh Lemon: You can use either a classic lemon or a Meyer lemon to make this glaze. A Meyer lemon will give the glaze a sweeter taste with a hint of orange while a regular lemon will make a nice tart glaze that pairs well with sweet treats.
- Powdered Sugar
How to Adjust the Glaze Consistency
Squeeze the lemon juice into a small mixing bowl and add the powdered sugar.
Whisk them together until very smooth, I usually just use a fork.
Depending on how you plan to use your lemon glaze, you may desire a thicker consistency. The recipe as written will make a smooth, fairly thin glaze that could be poured easily over a cake or used for dipping homemade donuts or muffin tops.
If you want to make a pretty drizzle pattern over your treat, you'll want to add additional powdered sugar just 1 tablespoon at a time. Whisk it in well between each addition and use your fork or whisk to pull up on the glaze to check the consistency.
When I drizzled the glaze over these Meyer lemon poppy seed muffins I added 2 more tablespoons to the glaze mixture and it was thick enough that it ran off my fork in smooth ribbons.
How to Use Lemon Glaze
There are countless delicious baked goods that would taste even better with a drizzle of lemon glaze over the top.
Some of my favorites include:
Quick Breads: Drizzle this over my lemon poppy seed bread for even more lemon flavor or add a citrusy zing to my zucchini bread.
Scones: Add a boost of citrus flavor to my easy blueberry scones or boost the lemon flavor to the next level in these lemon scones.
Muffins: Add more lemony flavor to a batch of Meyer lemon poppy seed muffins or your favorite blueberry muffin recipe.
Cookies: Drizzle them over a batch of sugar cookies, buttery shortbread, or garnish these lemon poppy seed cookies. They'd add such a fresh boost to a batch of gingerbread cookies, too.
Breakfast Treats: Use lemon glaze over these easy blueberry rolls or even a platter of buttermilk pancakes.
