If you love cinnamon rolls like I do, you're going to love these homemade blueberry rolls.

Made with a similar dough but rolled out and filled with fresh blueberries and topped with a citrus glaze they are such a fun variation for the classic breakfast pastry.

When you use a bread machine to make the dough, you only need a few minutes of time to assemble the rolls. You can prep them the night before and bake them in the morning which makes them perfect for a holiday brunch.

Why This is the Best Recipe

When fresh blueberries are in season and you want a new way to use them for a special treat, this is the best blueberry rolls recipe because:

  1. Easy to Prep: The simple dough gets prepped right in a bread machine. Just roll the dough out and bake!
  2. Sweet and Juicy Berries: Use fresh blueberries for the most delicious flavor.
  3. Citrus Glaze: The simple glaze to frost the top of the rolls has a hint of orange juice in it which complements the blueberries so well.

Ingredients

The ingredients to make homemade blueberry rolls in a bread machine are on the counter.

Making homemade breakfast rolls only requires a few easy ingredients:

  • Flour: Just regular all-purpose flour works here.
  • Sugar: You'll need both regular sugar and powdered sugar for the glaze.
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Kosher Salt
  • Instant Yeast
  • Fresh Blueberries: Do not try to use frozen blueberries for this recipe. They will add too much liquid to the recipe as they thaw.
  • Orange Juice

Make the Dough

As with all bread machine recipes, you definitely want to add the ingredients to the bread pan in the order they are listed in the recipe.

Start by adding the liquid ingredients first. Add the milk and vanilla to the bread pan.

Then add the softened butter, cut into chunks. One large chunk of butter would be too difficult for the bread machine paddle to knead well. Just cut it into smaller pieces before adding to the pan.

The milk and butter are in the bread pan.

Then add the dry ingredients right on top.

Add the flour, sugar, and salt to the pan on top of the milk. Use the back of a spoon to dig a well in the center and add the instant yeast right on top.

The flour and yeast have been added to the bread pan.

Dough Program

Place the bread pan back in the bread maker. Select the DOUGH program and press Start.

The dough should finish in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Shape the Rolls

When the dough is ready, transfer it to a baking mat and roll the dough out to a 20 x 12-inch rectangle.

Rub a tablespoon of softened butter all around the inside of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan and set aside.

Melt the butter in the microwave and mix in the orange extract, if using. Use a pastry brush to spread the butter evenly all over the surface of the rolled dough.

The step by step photos show how to cut and shape the blueberry rolls.

Scatter the sugar over the top of the dough evenly.

Roll the dough into a log starting at the long edge and working towards you. See photos in post above for clarification. Cut the log into 12 equal slices and place them cut side up in the prepared baking pan.

Second Rise

Cover the pan with plastic wrap and let the orange rolls rise for 20 - 30 minutes in a warm place.

They should double in size.

Baking Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375ยฐF.

Bake the blueberry rolls for 20 - 25 minutes or until golden brown.

The rolls are fresh from the oven and golden brown.

Make the Glaze

To prepare the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice with a fork until smooth.

The step by step photos show how to make the citrus glaze.

If the glaze is too thick, add a sprinkle of orange juice or milk to thin it out. If the glaze is too runny, you can add a tablespoon of powdered sugar to thicken it up.

Make Ahead Tips

If you would like to prep these ahead for a special brunch or holiday, you can assemble the blueberry rolls right up to the second rise stage.

Cover them with plastic wrap and place them in the fridge. You can keep them overnight and then just bake them in the morning. Let them rise on the stovetop while the oven preheats.

I do not recommend freezing these rolls. The blueberries will release too many juices and ruin the texture of your rolls.

Also, I do not recommend baking them the day before. They are best served fresh from the oven.

Serving Suggestions

The pan of blueberry rolls have been glazed with the citrus glaze.

These fresh and fruity breakfast rolls are an amazing centerpiece for a weekend brunch with your family. They are elegant enough to be served for a special holiday brunch like Easter or Christmas, too.

Pair them with a platter of peppered bacon and steaming carafes of coffee for a simple breakfast.

Or add in a family-style serving of scrambled eggs and vegetables, a side of turkey sausage, and these for a larger brunch menu.

Recipe Notes

Make Ahead Tips:

To prep the rolls ahead of time, you can refrigerate the assembled blueberry rolls. Cover them in plastic wrap and chill them before they do the final rise. Simply set them on the oven while it preheats in the morning and they will rise well before baking.
I don't recommend freeze these rolls, the blueberries will get very juicy during the thawing process and the liquid could ruin the dough.
