When you're super excited to try a new product and it is completely unavailable at your local grocery store, save your frustration and make it at home instead.

I've hunted a dozen grocery stores from North Carolina all the way down to Alabama and I just could not get my hands on a single jar of the popular gingerbread finishing sugar no matter how hard I tried!

Then I realized that of all the yummy things, this would likely be the easiest to duplicate right at home.

In 5 minutes, I had a batch stirred up in my kitchen and ready to gift to friends who would also like to add this delicious warm spice to their pantry for the holiday season.

Why This is the Best Recipe

  1. Quick & Easy: You probably have most items in your pantry right now!
  2. SO Delicious: I have tons of easy ideas for how to use this warm spiced sugar. Be sure to see my list below.
  3. Easy Gifting: Unless you're a very serious baker, you'll have plenty to fill several spice jars to share with friends.

Ingredients

The spices needed to make the recipe are lined up on the kitchen counter.

This simple recipe only needs the following easy ingredients from your spice rack:

  • Ground Ginger
  • Cinnamon
  • Allspice
  • Cloves
  • Sugar: Be sure to use regular white sugar, not brown sugar here.

Mix the Spices

The spices have been spooned into a mixing bowl, you can see each one in a separate pile.

Add all the spices and the sugar to a small mixing bowl and mix them together with a fork until very well combined.

NOTE: If you just want to have a jar of "Gingerbread Spice," do not add the sugar. You could use this to make gingerbread flavored baked goods by mixing it directly into the batter.

However, by adding the sugar, you'll dilute the heavily spiced flavor just enough for a sprinkle on top of your treat to not completely overpower the final serving.

The sugar has been stirred into the spices.

Storage Tips

All year long I save my empty glass spice jars. I wash them thoroughly and use goo-gone to remove the residue from the labels.

Then when I make a big batch of homemade spice blends or flavored sugars, I have ready-to-go sprinkle jars at hand.

If you want to make this recipe for gifting right now, you can order this jar of empty spice jars that would work perfectly. One batch of gingerbread sugar will fill 3.5 - 4 jars, depending on how full you fill them.

Otherwise, you could keep the entire batch in a mason jar and just use a spoon for sprinkling.

How to Use Gingerbread Spice Finishing Sugar

I first heard about gingerbread sugar from my friend Melissa who said it tastes amazing sprinkled over her morning cup of hot coffee. It would make such a fun addition to my Christmas coffee station for gingerbread lattes.

Anything you're baking this holiday season would likely benefit from a sprinkle of this finishing sugar. You could use it in the streusel topping of my cinnamon streusel muffins or use it to roll sugar cookie dough balls and make gingerbread snickerdoodles.

Add some sparkle to the top of my chocolate pear bread pudding or this classic New Orleans bread pudding.

Add some warm spice to a batch of zucchini bread or my bread machine banana bread.

Make your morning breakfast a little more festive by sprinkling it into a bowl of Irish oatmeal or adding to buttermilk pancakes or buttermilk waffles.
