Air Fryer Apple Turnovers
Bake these flaky apple turnovers in the air fryer or in your oven with just 3 simple ingredients plus a sprinkle of sugar on top. Serve them warm for a special breakfast treat or an easy fruit dessert alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I love apple turnovers but the prepared ones from the grocery store are usually so disappointing. I want them fresh and flaky and warm right out of the oven, don't you??
The good news is, you can bake a batch of these easy air fryer apple turnovers using just 3 ingredients in less than 30 minutes.
This would be a delicious breakfast treat for Thanksgiving or Christmas but could easily double as a simple fruit dessert if you add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, too!
Why This is the Best Recipe
I love quick and easy breakfast pastries. I think these are the best air fryer apple turnovers because:
- Easy Ingredients: I had everything on hand in my fridge/pantry for when the baking mood strikes.
- Super Quick: Assembling and baking take just minutes, you could make these last minute for breakfast.
- Hot and Flaky with Perfect Filling: The turnovers bake up a gorgeous golden brown and are so flaky. The filling is piping hot, so be careful!
A Note on Air Fryers
I baked these turnovers in my Ninja Foodi air fryer which has multiple racks and comes with small baking pans.
If you want to bake them in an air fryer that has the basket style, you could still do it but may need to work in batches. The turnovers need to be baked in a single layer with room around to puff up.
If you decide you don't want to use your air fryer after all, you can bake these on a baking sheet in your oven with the same temperature and time as listed in the recipe card.
Ingredients
All you need to make this easy recipe is:
- Puff Pastry: I used a roll of pre-rolled dough I found in the refrigerated section. If you use frozen puff pastry, be sure to thaw it first.
- Canned Apple Pie Filling: If you prefer to make this from scratch, you could but the canned pie filling is just so easy.
- Egg: This is for the egg wash on top.
- OPTIONAL: I used sparkling sugar I already had in my pantry to give the turnovers a glistening festive top. You could use regular sugar or let the turnovers cool completely and drizzle them with vanilla glaze or this cream cheese drizzle.

Roll and Slice the Puff Pastry
Roll your puff pastry out on a working surface.
Use a pizza wheel to slice it in half lengthwise.
Then slice it in half crosswise. You'll have 4 rectangles. Cut each rectangle in half to make 4 equal squares that look like this:
Fill the Turnovers
Spoon just 1 - 2 apples per square with a little of the apple pie filling sauce. Be careful that you don't overfill the squares or you won't be able to seal them properly.
I had to go back in and remove 1 apple from each little square you see here, this was just a *smidge* too much for me to close them properly. You'll end up using about 2/3 of the can of pie filling for one batch of dough.
Seal and Brush with Egg Wash
Once you've turned over the corners to form the turnover, use a fork to press along the edges to seal them shut.
Transfer them to an air fryer baking pan lined with parchment paper.
Whisk together the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the pastry with the egg wash and then sprinkle the sugar over the top if you're using it.
Baking Instructions
Preheat your air fryer or oven to 425ยฐF.
Bake the turnovers for 15 minutes or until they are golden brown and puffy.
Be sure to let them cool for at least 15 minutes before serving, they are blazing hot!
Variations
You could use this same method to make a wide variety of turnover flavors!
Grab a can of cherry pie filling, blueberry pie filling, or peach pie filling and just substitute it for the apple.
If you like a little crunch, you could add chopped pecans or chopped walnuts in with the pie filling, too.
Make Ahead Tips
This easy breakfast treat took just 10 minutes to assemble but if you wanted to cut down on that time, you could fill and shape the turnovers the night before and keep them in the fridge for baking fresh in the morning.
I suggest waiting to brush the egg wash on top until just before they go in the oven. Cover the baking pan with plastic wrap so the pastry doesn't dry out.
Alternatively, you could bake these the day before and then just warm them gently in the oven before serving.
Serving Suggestions
This quick and easy apple treat would make a fun breakfast surprise "just because" any time this holiday season.
They would also be perfect on a breakfast buffet for a holiday brunch or a special way to start your Thanksgiving morning.
You could also serve them as a simple fruit dessert in a bowl with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce over the top.

Air Fryer Apple Turnovers
Ingredients
- 1 (375g) package of puff pastry
- 1 (20 oz) can of apple pie filling
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 425ยฐF. You could also bake these in your oven at the same temp.
- Roll out the puff pastry. Use a pizza wheel to slice it in half lengthwise and then slice it in half crosswise. Slice each half once more to make 8 equal squares.
- Spoon 1 - 2 apple slices and 2 tablespoons of sauce from the canned apple pie filling onto each square. If you put too many apples on, the squares won't close up and seal, so less is better.
- Fold the puff pastry over corner to corner to form a triangle. Use a fork to press along the edges to seal it closed.
- Transfer the turnovers to an air fryer baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Whisk the egg and 1 tablespoon of water together to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of each turnover with the egg wash. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the tops.
- Air fry the turnovers for 15 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Let them cool for at least 15 minutes before serving, the filling will be extremely hot.
