4 salmon filets have been roasted with a miso glaze and are served on a white platter. A fork takes a bite out of one.

Salmon has long been our family's favorite fish to cook for dinner. It is excellent at pairing with such a huge variety of salmon seasonings and marinades.

This easy miso salmon is perfect for nights when you want an Asian-inspired dinner to pair with rice and veggies. The sweet and savory glaze is perfect for kids and is enticing to eat with that gorgeously caramelized crust on top.

You can flake the leftover filets for an easy rice bowl to bring for lunch the next day, too!

Why This is the Best Recipe

  • Easy Ingredients: If you're new to cooking with miso, this is a perfect place to start. The remaining ingredients are very simple and likely in your pantry now.
  • Prep Ahead Dinner: Get the marinade prepped ahead and then pop the salmon in. Dinner comes together in a pinch.
  • Kid-Friendly Family Dinner: This is a great way to introduce miso to kids, the sweetness from the brown sugar balances it out so nicely.

Ingredients

The ingredients to make Miso Salmon are on the kitchen counter.

The short list of ingredients makes this such a perfect pick for a busy night:

  • Fresh Salmon Filets: I buy the skinless filets in a pack from our grocery store.
  • White Miso Paste: You'll find this in the Asian foods section of the grocery store. It comes in a square block. You can freeze the leftovers in an ice cube tray so this unique ingredient doesn't go to waste.
  • Soy Sauce
  • Rice Vinegar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Sriracha
  • Green Onions (for garnish)
  • Sesame Seeds

Prepare the Miso Marinade

Add the miso paste, soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, Sriracha, and kosher salt to a large mixing bowl and whisk them together until smooth.

Spoon out 2 - 3 tablespoons of the marinade and reserve it for brushing over the cooked salmon at the very end.

Place the salmon filets in the bowl with the remaining marinade and turn them to coat.

Marinating Time

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1 - 3 hours.

I like to keep the reserved marinade in a small covered dish right with the salmon so it doesn't get lost in my fridge:

Oven Cooking Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Place the salmon on a broiler-safe baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.

Bake the salmon for 10 - 12 minutes.

Remove the salmon from the oven and preheat the broiler with a rack about 6 inches away from the heating element.

While the broiler is preheating, brush the tops of the salmon with the reserved miso glaze.

Broil the salmon for 1 - 2 minutes.

Air Fryer Cooking Instructions

Preheat your air fryer to 400°F.

Place the salmon in a single layer in your air fryer. I have a convection oven style air fryer that has small baking sheets that work perfectly for this. If you have a basket-style air fryer you may need to work in batches.

Air fry the salmon for 8 - 10 minutes.

Brush the tops with the reserved glaze and continue to air fry the salmon for an additional 1 - 2 minutes or until the glaze has caramelized and the fish reads 130°F at the thickest part of the fish.

NOTE: You can finish the salmon by broiling it in your air fryer if that feature is available on your appliance. This ensures a perfectly caramelized surface.

Make Ahead Tips

Though fresh fish is notoriously difficult to prep far in advance, there are some handy make ahead tips you may find useful:

  1. Prep the Marinade: You can prep the miso marinade a few days in advance if you don't put the fish in it. Just store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
  2. Plan for Leftovers: The leftover cooked salmon will keep well for up to 2 days if you plan to reheat it.
  3. Freeze a Meal: You can use this for freezer meal prep. Salmon freezes quite nicely. I recommend letting it thaw in the fridge overnight so you don't over cook it while reheating it in the microwave.

There are so many easy dinners you can make from this simple salmon dish. When I served it to my family, I placed each filet over a bed of my Instant Pot scallion rice to boost the fresh green onion flavor.

You could serve it alongside this cool and crispy zesty cucumber salad as a side dish or top the salmon with a spoonful of quick pickled vegetables.

If you love a little more kick, try drizzling some spicy mayo sauce over the top!
