I love grilling out as much as the next home cook, but when it comes to a busy weeknight dinner, I'm more prone to popping something into the oven than firing up the grill.

But even though I love to use my oven I still enjoy a good barbecue dinner!

This lighter baked Alabama bbq chicken breast recipe lets us enjoy a seasoned southern staple even on the craziest of nights. Don't miss my easy side dishes that help turn it into a full blown meal.

Why This is the Best Recipe

Baked chicken breasts are always such an easy go-to dinner idea on a busy night. You simply season them and pop them in the oven. But I think this is the best Alabama bbq chicken recipe because:

  1. Sweet and Spicy: The super-flavorful dry rub for this recipe is fantastic. You can mix it together with just 5 ingredients.
  2. Tangy with a Kick: The drizzle of Alabama white sauce over the top is my FAVORITE. Move over tomato-based bbq sauce, there's a new recipe at your table.
  3. Meal Kit Friendly: You can easily double what you buy at the grocery store and use half to make dinner tonight and the other half to prep a meal kit for another night and freeze it. Be sure to check out my tips below.

Ingredients

The chicken breasts in the mixing bowl have been coated with the dry rub.

This quick and easy chicken dinner recipe only requires a 3 things:

  1. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts: You could substitute chicken tenderloins or chicken thighs if you prefer.
  2. Chicken Wing Dry Rub: You can buy a pre-mixed seasoning blend but I mix my own chicken wing dry rub with just five ingredients. I included the full recipe in the recipe card below for your convenience.
  3. Alabama BBQ Sauce: You could buy your favorite brand at the grocery store but it takes just a minute to mix up your own Alabama white sauce. I included the easy recipe in the recipe card below.

Bake the Seasoned Chicken

The beautiful thing about using a dry rub is the prep work takes just seconds.

Lay out the chicken and sprinkle it with the dry rub. Turn to coat. That's it! SO easy.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with foil.

Line up the chicken in a single layer and bake for 30 minutes.

I always turn the chicken half way through so it can brown nicely on both sides.

Prep the Alabama BBQ Sauce

While the chicken is baking, you could whisk together my homemade Alabama bbq sauce in just a minute.

This super tangy barbecue sauce has a mayonnaise and vinegar base with a hint of horseradish.

It pairs so well with the sweet and spicy paprika and brown sugar based wing rub on this chicken.

Make Your Own Meal Kit

The chicken, seasonings, and Alabama white sauce have been packaged for the freezer.

Is the chicken on sale this week? Want to save some time making dinner another night? This recipe is the perfect Make Your Own Meal Kit option.

  1. Place the chicken in a freezer bag and mark with the date.
  2. Pre-mix and measure the wing seasoning and place it in a smaller freezer bag.
  3. Whisk together the Alabama white sauce and pour into a third freezer bag.

Tuck all three of those bags into one larger storage bag and mark with the date.

Freeze for up to 6 months. Thaw in the refrigerator the night before you want to use it.

Keep a bag of tater tots or frozen french fries and a pouch of frozen veggies and you have an entire freezer meal ready to grab!

Alabama bbq chicken pairs especially well with a sweet potato side dish like my crispy roasted sweet potatoes or this easy freezer-friendly sweet potato casserole.

It would also taste great with a bag of frozen tater tots or fries or my easy roasted mini potatoes and onions.

If you don't like the idea of the white sauce drizzled on top, you might prefer my favorite chow chow relish instead. It's a southern staple!

Add a batch of air fryer green beans and you're ready to go.
