Every year I like to add just one or two special things to my Christmas decoration collection and I knew that top priority this year was a child-friendly Nativity set for the peanut.
I remember being thrilled setting up and arranging and rearranging our Nativity set as a child. It wasn't a "toy" but mom let us touch it and "play" with all the characters. I definitely wanted to recreate that feeling with something that wouldn't leave broken shards of glass beneath our tree.
I spent several hours one Sunday looking up child-friendly sets online and was sorely disappointed by so many of the options! Perhaps my criteria was a little too strict (wanted something unique but not too abstract, preferably wooden with non-toxic paint, and mostly affordable.) It was the last qualification that proved to be the trickiest.
But just as I was about to give up and order the Fisher Price "Little People" version to get us through this year, I came across this:
I could not be more pleased with the set. I usually edit my photos for this blog to make them a little more vibrant, but I purposely left these raw so you could see the color palette properly. It is a sweet little set that is not overly pastel but still very youthful.
I'm in love with the little carved animals, the stable standing pieces, and the size is just perfect for little hands to clutch. For only $35 through Christmas (third set down from the top), the price was exactly right for my budget. So many wooden sets ran $100-$300+ for all the characters featured here.
I can't wait for the day after Thanksgiving to give this to the peanut. I'm really looking forward to finding it's place of honor for the season.
