Christmas quilt in progress, part 1

I finally got the courage to slice into my precious fat quarter bundle. I spent my first afternoon just planning and trimming the material. I'm very much an assembly line sewer, so I like having everything prepped and ready when I get to finally sit down at my sewing machine.

God bless rotary cutters.

Peppermintstacks

With my  handy dandy cutting board and rotary cutter, I was able to sit back and look at this neat little stack of pieces all ready to go. That is an entire quilt top featured in the picture above. A quilt top that when pieced together then resembles this:

I assembled each block, pressed, and then laid the whole top out on my living room floor. It is like working with one giant fabric puzzle. This is my favorite quilting stage, I love getting this first peek at what the final quilt will look like.

Once the blocks are all laid out in the order I like best, I neatly stack them again and do one last assembly line sewing to finish the top. Stay tuned for the final peek at the quilt top before it goes off to the quilter!

WOW!!! This looks amazing. Have you seen the Material Obsession book yet? I just got it from the library and thought of you. If you haven't looked at it, definitely do so!

Do you have to sew each little square on to each bigger square, and then sew the bigger squares into strips, and then sew the strips together?

Hmm, Colet. The "little" squares are 5x5 inch patches so they're not all that little. The most time consuming part was cutting the strips, the sewing itself was a blink of an eye. It's going to end up being a nice size throw (about 70 inches, I think) and each block is 8 inches or so. With my final photos, I'll put something in for reference in size. It looks putzier than it actually is.
Thanks for the compliments on the color combo, everyone. Truth be told, all the hard work was done by the designer 3 Sisters, I just purchased the collection. It is gorgeous fabric and the blue is what sold me.
