My monthly book club meets tomorrow and for once I'm not going to be rushing off to Starbucks to finish the monthly selection!
No, I'm not organized or on top of things, I actually read the book last year. Oh well, I need the extra time for next month's pick. But at least this month I can tell you ahead of the meeting that the book is absolutely wonderful. If you haven't yet read it, I highly recommend it.
One of the things that really intrigued me when I was deciding whether or not to read it in the first place is the fact that Stephen King has a quote on the cover recommending it as a good read. I have an especially soft spot for Mr. King because I think my dad is perhaps his biggest fan. He's read everything the man has ever written, in some cases multiple times.
A few years ago, I read Stephen King's "On Writing" and it gave me a whole new respect for him. One of the quotes that has stuck with me ever since said something along the lines of: "If you don't have time to read, you don't have time to write." He talked about his insatiable need to devour as many books as possible and how that has improved and affected his writing.
I've been surprised through the years to see books that include recommendations from Stephen King, they always vary in topic and genre. But generally I tend to agree with his stamp of approval. At the very least you know you're in for a story that will be well crafted and include colorful characters.
"Water for Elephants" definitely fits that bill.
