A copy of the book Murder on the Orient Express sits on a table.

When I was in junior high, I went through a serious love affair with Agatha Christie books.

I devoured one after the other all summer long. I can still picture the library shelf with all the titles lined up.

The very moment the trailer began for the movie adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, I knew exactly what I was seeing.

I was thrilled when the members of the Peanut Blossom Book Club for Recovering Readers voted to read Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie for our October pick!!

Check out the full book description for Murder on the Orient Express here:

“The murderer is with us—on the train now . . .”

Just after midnight, the famous Orient Express is stopped in its tracks by a snowdrift. By morning, the millionaire Samuel Edward Ratchett lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside. Without a shred of doubt, one of his fellow passengers is the murderer.

Isolated by the storm, detective Hercule Poirot must find the killer among a dozen of the dead man’s enemies, before the murderer decides to strike again.”

Murder on the Orient Express Book Club Questions

I believe the best book club questions to spark a lively discussion in your group help readers make personal connections to the story.

You can read about how to write the best book club questions on your own here, but hopefully these will get you started!

    Question 1:

What did you think of this month’s pick? Have you read Agatha Christie before?

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 2:

Do you read mystery novels? Who are some of your favorite authors? Are you able to compare them to Agatha Christie’s classic?

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 3:

As Poirot solves the mystery, heavy-handed racial profiling is used to judge the suspects.

Did you feel the book portrayed it as an accepted practice for the time or was the author pointing it out to make commentary on the method?

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 4:

Did anyone look up the map of the route for the original Orient Express train? Which colored route would you take now if you could?

See the online discussion and map graphic here.

    Question 5:

How do you think they did with the casting for the movie version of the book?

I think Kenneth Branagh as Poirot might be my favorite! You can see the full cast and trailer at the official web site here.

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 6:

What is the difference between revenge and justice?

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 7:

I know we had some readers who didn’t like this month’s book. Can you tell us why?

Are you interested in seeing the movie version or was the story itself the part you couldn’t get into?

    See the online discussion here.

    Question 8:

Murder on the Orient Express was published in 1934.

Does the story still hold up today?

We read it 83 years after it was written, what details stood out to you that said it was not a modern novel?

    See the online discussion here.

    Host a Movie Watch Party

Since this classic novel was turned into a movie with Kenneth Branagh starring as Inspector Poirot, why not turn your book club meeting into a movie watch party?
