Mustard glazed salmon is a great family dinner for a busy weeknight. Serve the sweet and sticky salmon with an easy citrus salad and scoop of couscous for a quick meal.

The salmon filet is coated in a brown sugar and mustard glaze and served on a white plate next to a bed of baby spinach.

I have a special fondness for salmon, it was one of the first seafood recipes I was able to get my young kids to eat during our meatless Fridays during Lent.

It still appears on our menu at least once a month. We love how fast it is to cook on a busy night but this savory mustard glaze makes it a dish we all look forward to eating even when we do have more time.

There are so many ways you could pair this main dish with easy sides for a healthy family dinner in a pinch.

Why This is the Best Recipe

Salmon is one of our family's favorite proteins for dinner but I think this is the best mustard glazed salmon recipe because:

  1. Crispy Broiled Top: I love the texture of that bubbling hot glaze on the top of the broiled fish.
  2. Sweet and Sticky: The brown sugar and mustard sauce is a perfect pairing with the sweetness of the fresh salmon.
  3. Kid Friendly: Between that awesome texture and sweet flavor, this is a great recipe to serve to kids.

Ingredients

The ingredients to make the salmon are arranged on a baking sheet on the counter.

Fish is such a fantastic family dinner because you need so few items to cook it at the last minute. Just pick these items up at the store:

  • Salmon Fillets: Cut into individual portions, skin removed. You can ask your fish seller to do this for you.
  • Brown Sugar
  • Whole Grain Mustard
  • Red Wine Vinegar
  • Onion
  • Olive Oil

Prep the Mustard Glaze

In a small saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-high.

Saute the onions until translucent.

Add vinegar and cook until nearly evaporated.

Add the mustard and brown sugar and heat through. Season with salt and pepper and remove from heat.

The brown sugar and mustard are cooking together in a saucepan on the stovetop.

Put half of the glaze into a small bowl to use as the salmon glaze, reserve the rest for brushing over the cooked salmon.

The finished glaze is in a measuring cup with a spatula.

Broil the Salmon

Heat the oven broiler with the oven rack in the top position.

On a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil, line up the salmon fillets.

The four salmon filets are lined up on a baking pan ready to be glazed.

Brush the fish with the mustard glaze you separated into the bowl. Be sure to get the sides of each piece of salmon.

Broil the salmon until the glaze is bubbling but watch so that it doesn't burn. It happens quickly because of the sugar!

The salmon should be opaque throughout.

The broiled salmon filets are cooling on the stovetop. They have a golden brown edge.

It takes roughly 5 - 10 minutes depending on the thickness of each piece of fish.

Remove the pan from broiler and brush the salmon with the reserved glaze.

Safety Note

Remember, do NOT use the pastry brush and mustard glaze that touched the raw salmon to baste the cooked salmon with more sauce at the end.

You don't want to risk contamination.

Be sure to wash the pastry brush and use fresh glaze for finishing the dish.

Serving Suggestions

The broiled salmon is ready to be served. It is coated in a thick glaze with mustard seeds.

This mustard glazed salmon would pair perfectly with my warm couscous salad with sweet oranges.

You could also use it on top of a my simple citrus salad with baby spinach.

The oven roasted mini potatoes has a hint of mustard and would be a great crispy side dish, too.
