Crispy peanut butter waffles with mini chocolate chips makes a delicious freezer friendly breakfast idea for kids.

Fresh griddled peanut butter waffles with mini chocolate chips are cooling on a rack.

School morning breakfasts are always a challenge, especially when my kids don't have lunch until much later in the day.

I love this easy peanut butter waffles recipe because I can prep them for the freezer and we just reheat them in the toaster in a flash.

That dose of peanut butter protein makes me feel a little better about their breakfast option for the day, especially when we spread a bit of cream cheese on top.

Why This is the Best Recipe

My family loves homemade waffles. We've tried so many flavors but we think this is the best peanut butter waffles recipe because:

  1. Nice and Crispy: The texture of these golden brown waffles is absolutely amazing. If you love a firm and crispy waffle on the outside but a light and fluffy waffle on the inside, this is the recipe for you.
  2. Subtle Peanut Butter Flavor: You will definitely taste the peanut butter in these waffles but it isn't an overpowering flavor. The mini chocolate chips serve as an awesome accent.
  3. Freezer-Friendly: You can easily freeze homemade waffles for busy school mornings. Just pop them in the toaster to get that gorgeous crispy crunch!

Ingredients

All the ingredients to make peanut butter waffles are on the counter.

This easy waffle recipe needs a few pantry ingredients:

  • Peanut Butter Powder: By using dried peanut butter powder you get all the peanut butter flavor while protecting the texture of the waffles. You can find dry peanut butter powder near the regular peanut butter at most grocery stores, but you can also buy it online here.
  • Flour
  • Cornstarch: This may sound like an unusual ingredient for waffles, but the cornstarch in the batter helps improve the crispy texture of the waffles when you add them to the waffle iron.
  • Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Vanilla

My Waffle Iron

The tricky part about writing recipes for homemade waffles is that the cooking time and batter quantity per waffle well can vary from waffle maker to waffle maker.

It's always best to follow the instructions for your specific model, but if you want to cook all the waffle recipes on my site with the same quantity and size as what you see in my photos, you can buy my exact same waffle maker here.

Mix the Peanut Butter Waffle Batter

As with all waffle recipes, to make the peanut butter waffle batter you start by mixing the dry ingredients first.

Add the flour, cornstarch, peanut butter powder, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon to a large mixing bowl and whisk them together until well combined.

The flour, sugar, and peanut butter powder are in a large mixing bowl.

Separately, measure the milk into a large liquid measuring cup.

Crack the eggs into the milk, add the vanilla. Then whisk them together until smooth.

Measure the vegetable oil separately.

The liquid ingredients for the waffles have been measured into cups.

Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir them together with a spatula until just combined.

The batter will be very thin and may have some small lumps, that's totally ok.

Then, stir in the mini chocolate chips if you decide to make peanut butter chocolate chip waffles.

The mixed waffle batter has a bowl of mini chocolate chips ready to be added to it.

Cooking Instructions

Preheat your waffle maker. My waffle maker lets me know it is ready to cook when the light turns green.

Spray the wells with cooking spray.

I add 1/3 cup batter to each of the four wells. Smooth it out into the corners.

The peanut butter waffle batter has been poured into the hot waffle iron.

My waffle maker takes 4 minutes to cook the waffles to a perfect golden brown color:

The peanut butter waffles have been fully cooked and are a gorgeous dark golden brown color.

How to Serve Waffles Family Style

If you want to cook a weekend breakfast for your family and serve everybody at the same time, preheat your oven to 200°F before you begin prepping the waffles.

Place a large baking sheet inside the oven.

As you cook the waffles, transfer the finished ones to the oven to keep warm while you repeat the process with the remaining batter.

Make Ahead Tips

I love making homemade waffles because they freeze so well.

If you want to make them in advance for a week of easy school morning breakfasts or if you'd like to prep a batch ahead of a holiday brunch, just be sure to let the waffles cool completely on a rack first.

You don't any steam building up in the storage bag or the waffles will develop freezer burn.

The chocolate chip waffles are cooling on the rack before freezing.

Once they've cooled completely, place a small square of parchment paper or waxed paper between each waffle so they don't stick together once frozen.

Then transfer the stacks of waffles to a freezer-friendly storage bag and freeze for up to six months.

To reheat frozen waffles, you can let them thaw in the fridge overnight.

Reheat them in the oven at 350°F in a single layer on a baking sheet until warmed through.

Alternatively, you could add just a waffle or two to the toaster to reheat on a busy morning.

Forgot to thaw overnight? Just wrap the waffles in paper towel and thaw them in the microwave for 2 minutes on 50% power.

Variations

A stack of waffles are on a white plate.

I love these golden brown crispy peanut butter waffles with mini chocolate chip just as is, but there are several delicious variations you could make:

Crunchy Peanut Butter Waffles: If you love the crunchy peanuts inside crunchy peanut butter, you could prep the waffle batter as directed and then stir in salted peanuts instead of the mini chocolate chips.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Waffles: One of my favorite serving suggestions is to spread strawberry jelly over warm peanut butter waffles (see notes below.) But, you could also bake the jelly flavor right into the waffle itself by stirring in finely chopped strawberries to the waffle batter.

Peanut Butter and Bacon Waffles: Have some leftover peppered bacon? You could crumble the cooked bacon into the waffle batter. Make it Elvis style and serve with fresh banana slices on top.

Serving Suggestions

The stack of peanut butter waffles has strawberry jelly running down the sides and a dollop of whipped cream on top.

As I mentioned above, I think one of the most delicious ways to serve these peanut butter waffles with chocolate chips is to drizzle a little of my homemade strawberry freezer jam over the top for a PB&J waffle flavor.

My blackberry freezer jam or cherry freezer jam would both be great alternatives for the strawberry.

The waffles are also delicious plain with just a spread of softened butter or even whipped cream cheese on top.

Mix in mini chocolate chips to this peanut butter waffles batter for a delicious freezer-friendly breakfast idea for the kids. Toast the waffles in the toaster and then spread with strawberry jam or a pat of warm butter. These waffles come out of the waffle iron so nice and crispy!
TOTAL TIME 20 minutes
PREP TIME 5 minutes
COOK TIME 15 minutes
YIELD 10 waffles

Ingredients

For the Peanut Butter Waffles Batter:

  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup dried peanut butter powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips optional

For Serving:

  • Strawberry freezer jam optional
  • Whipped Cream optional

Instructions

  • If you want to serve the waffles family-style all at once, preheat your oven to 200°F with a large baking sheet inside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients first. Add the flour, cornstarch, dried peanut butter powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk them together until well combined.
  • Measure the milk in a liquid measuring cup and then crack the eggs into the milk. Add the vanilla and whisk them together. Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients. Then measure the vegetable oil and pour that in, too.
  • Gently stir the waffle batter together. It will be a very thin batter and you may still have some lumps, but be sure to break up any remaining dry pockets of flour.
  • Stir in the mini chocolate chips if using them.
  • Preheat your waffle iron. Once it is ready to cook, spray the wells with cooking spray and then add the batter according to your appliance's direction. For my waffle maker with four wells that make 4-inch waffles, I use 1/3 cup batter for each well. I cook the waffles for 4 minutes and they come out perfectly golden brown.
  • Use a pair of tongs to lift the waffles from the waffle iron. Transfer them to the preheated oven to keep warm while you finish the remaining batch or let them cool on a rack if you are making them ahead for the freezer.
  • Peanut butter waffles with chocolate chips taste amazing with a drizzle of strawberry jam and whipped cream on top but would pair well with a spread of softened butter or cream cheese, too.
